Perplexity is the most citation-forward of the answer engines: every claim in an answer is footnoted to a source, and the sources are displayed prominently. That makes it the engine where publisher effort is most visible, and the one where citation behavior is easiest to study by simply asking it questions.
Its own crawler, its own index
Unlike ChatGPT, which leans on an external search index, Perplexity operates PerplexityBot and maintains its own index alongside partnerships with search providers. The practical consequence: being crawlable by PerplexityBot in robots.txt is a hard prerequisite, and your visibility there is not simply a mirror of your Google rankings. Sites that rank modestly in Google sometimes do disproportionately well in Perplexity, and the reverse happens too.
What its answers favor
Sampling questions across topics shows consistent preferences:
- Freshness. Perplexity visibly prefers recently updated pages, especially for anything with a time dimension. Stale dates cost citations here faster than anywhere else.
- Direct answers. Pages that state the answer plainly near the top get quoted; pages that build to a conclusion get skipped.
- Diverse source types. Answers typically cite a mix: a reference site, a specialist blog, a news piece. Being the best specialist source for a narrow question is a winnable position.
How publishers show up
Perplexity runs a publisher program that shares revenue with participating outlets, and cited domains appear with favicon and name, so brand recognition compounds. For most sites the path is unglamorous: allow the crawler, keep dates current, structure passages to be liftable, and hold a clear position on the questions you want to own.
The same passage discipline pays off across engines; see the ChatGPT guide for the OpenAI side and the AI Overviews breakdown for Google's.
