The tooling for AI search splits into three jobs: tracking whether engines cite you, watching AI crawlers hit your server, and folding AI visibility into a classic SEO workflow. Most teams need one tool from the first category and free analytics for the rest. Here is how the field looks in 2026, based on our own use of each category.
Citation trackers
These tools ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI features a list of prompts you define, on a schedule, and record which domains get cited. Profound, Peec AI, and Otterly.AI are the established names. They differ mainly in which engines they sample, how many prompts your plan includes, and how well they separate your brand mentions from actual link citations. Pricing is per tracked prompt and changes often, so treat published numbers as a starting point and run a trial against the twenty questions you most want to win.
Who they suit: teams with a defined question set and enough content to compete for it. If you have fewer than a dozen target questions, manual sampling in a spreadsheet gives you the same signal for free.
The big SEO suites
Semrush's AI toolkit and Ahrefs' Brand Radar both bolt AI answer tracking onto their existing keyword databases. Their advantage is context: you see AI citations next to the rankings, backlinks, and traffic estimates you already monitor. Their weakness is prompt coverage, since they sample a fixed question set rather than yours. They suit teams already paying for the suite who want directional AI visibility without another subscription.
Crawler and referral analytics
Two free signals cover most measurement needs. Your server logs (or CDN dashboard) show GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot activity, which confirms you are being read. Your web analytics show referral visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, which confirms you are being clicked. We cover the setup in Measuring AI search traffic in your analytics.
How to choose
- Under 20 target questions: sample manually each month, spend nothing.
- Growing content site: one citation tracker on the smallest plan, plus free referral analytics.
- Already on Semrush or Ahrefs: turn on their AI tracking first and only add a dedicated tracker if you outgrow its prompt limits.
Whichever you pick, the tool only measures. The gains come from the content work described in our AEO guide.
